It was a huge challenge for Pan Asian Media in May 2018 to introduce a brand new T10 League team, The Karachians, in just one press conference. The team had no media exposure, inexperienced owners who were not known in business or sports circles, and no finalised logo or team identity. Their only asset? Icon player Shane Watson—but even that came with risks, as the owners had no clue how to face the press. Everything was on the line, and the chances of making any significant contribution were low.
Then came the game-changer. Just 48 hours before the scheduled press conference, Shane Watson smashed a match-winning century in the IPL 2018 finals, propelling Chennai Super Kings to victory. He had not spoken to the media since that explosive performance, his first post-final appearance being with The Karachians. Pan Asian Media took advantage of this golden opportunity, educating the owners, developing a strong message and making Watson the show-stopper. The result? The conference was overrun by journalists, who were in such numbers that the programme had to be extended.
The press was obviously going to grill Watson about his IPL heroics, but Pan Asian Media did not leave any stone unturned and made sure that the focus was always on The Karachians. The event was covered by all major local, regional, and international outlets, and at the time was the largest press conference in T10 League history. Every report had the team's name and owner's identity embedded in it, making them instantly recognisable. The impact was felt throughout the entire nation. The T10 League management were impressed with the execution and awarded Pan Asian Media the PR mandate for 2018 and 2019. The agency's efforts to raise the league's profile paid off within a year, as Abu Dhabi Sports Council joined forces to rebrand it as the Abu Dhabi T10 League. Al Jabal Poultry Farm had done something truly extraordinary: it had installed state-of-the-art technology that was able to trap the smelly ammonia gases from the chicken waste and use them in a bacteria plant, thereby eliminating the smell and pollution that had forced them to close their doors. But they were in for a public relations disaster: journalists didn't want to report on 'chicken poop,' and the client's staunch officials were unwilling to provide any information, would not let camera crews in on the site, and were unable to reach a consensus on environmental messaging. The agency didn't have a single visual and the story was one that media would naturally turn a blind eye to.
Instead of trying to overcome the client's constraints, Pan Asian Media shifted gears. They arranged a half day visit for 20 journalists and set up their pre-positioned journalists to ask savvy questions: How big is the UAE egg market? How many eggs are imported? What is the value of the annual consumption? Then, the story turned from stinking garbage to a fascinating economic one, one that was newsworthy and read by consumers.
The agency then rewrote the entire press report, incorporating the environmental solution into a larger market analysis. They shared this polished version with a few media outlets, who repeated it word-for-word, including the angle on the environment, which was a tough sell in the first place. The campaign was not about forcing a story that no one wanted, but it was about making a story that journalists couldn't ignore. The bottom line: If your story smells bad in the news, don't bury it, rework it. Identify the right angle to catch the attention of journalists, plant the right questions, and let the market do the rest.
